WHAT IS FORESTRY MULCHING?

Forestry mulching is a land clearing method that uses a specialized machine to grind trees, brush, vines, and underbrush directly into the ground. Rather than cutting and hauling debris off the property, everything gets processed right where it stands and left as a natural mulch layer on the soil. The result is a clean, open piece of ground without the burn piles, stump grinding, or hauling costs that come with more traditional clearing methods.

It’s one of the most efficient ways to reclaim overgrown land in Middle Georgia, and it’s our most requested service at Hitson Custom Works.

WHO USES FORESTRY MULCHING?

We handle forestry mulching jobs for a wide range of customers in the Dublin area and across Middle Georgia. Some of the most common situations we see include landowners who’ve let acreage sit and need to reclaim it, hunters who want shooting lanes opened or maintained before deer season, property owners dealing with fence rows that have been taken over by brush and small trees, and developers or homeowners who want a cleaner approach to site prep.

If your land has gotten ahead of you, forestry mulching is usually the fastest way to get it back under control.

HOW IT WORKS

We bring a skid steer or excavator equipped with a forestry mulcher attachment to the property. The machine moves through the overgrown area, chewing through brush, saplings, and small trees as it goes. Larger trees can also be handled depending on size and species. Everything that goes through the mulcher comes out as fine chips that settle on the ground — no burning, no hauling, no large debris left behind.

We can work in tight areas, along fence lines, around water features, and through terrain that heavier clearing equipment couldn’t navigate. That flexibility makes mulching useful in a lot of situations where a bulldozer wouldn’t work well.

COMMON USES IN MIDDLE GEORGIA

Shooting lanes and hunting property management are a big part of what we do, especially coming into fall. Many landowners from Florida and other areas outside Georgia come up to hunting camps in the fall and realize their lanes are completely grown over. We can clear those quickly and keep them manageable for the season.

Fence row clearing is another frequent request. Fence rows in Middle Georgia get thick fast, and a mulcher can clear along the fence line efficiently without disturbing the fence itself.

Land reclamation, general brush control, and site prep before grading are also common jobs where forestry mulching makes the most sense.

PAIR THIS SERVICE WITH

Forestry mulching is often a great first step before other land work. Many of our customers combine mulching with grading or site work to fully prepare a piece of ground for construction or development. If you have heavy trees or large material that needs to come out before mulching can begin, we can handle land clearing first. Fence row clearing is frequently done at the same time as general mulching projects to knock everything out in one visit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS — FORESTRY MULCHING

How is forestry mulching different from just cutting everything down?

With traditional cutting, you end up with piles of debris that have to be burned or hauled off. Forestry mulching processes everything on the spot, so what you’re left with is open ground covered in a fine mulch layer. There’s no burn pile, no stump grinding, and no hauling. It’s cleaner and usually faster.

How thick of brush and trees can you mulch?

It depends on the equipment and the specific job, but we can handle most brush, undergrowth, vines, and a good range of small to mid-size trees. For very large trees or heavy timber, we may need to use the excavator to remove those first before mulching the surrounding area. Every property is a little different, so we take a look before we give you a firm answer.

Will the mulching hurt my existing trees or the soil?

No. Forestry mulching is actually considered one of the lower-impact clearing methods because it leaves organic material on the ground that breaks down over time. It doesn’t disturb the root systems of nearby trees the way dozer work can, and the mulch layer helps with erosion in the short term.

How long does a forestry mulching job usually take?

That depends entirely on the size of the area and how dense the growth is. A small fence row might take a few hours. A larger overgrown parcel could take a full day or more. When we come out to take a look, we’ll give you a realistic time estimate.

Can you clear shooting lanes before deer season?

Yes, and we do a lot of those. If you’ve got a hunting property that needs lanes opened or cleared out before the season starts, give us a call. The sooner the better, since we do get busy heading into fall.

Do I need to be on the property when you’re working?

Not necessarily. We can coordinate access and get the job done, but if it’s your first time working with us, being there at the start so we can walk through the property together is always helpful. We want to make sure we’re clearing exactly what you want cleared and leaving what you want to keep.
